In 2010, I had the chance to work as a game design consultant on Somethin Else‘s ground-breaking Papa Sangre – a videogame with no video. Set inside a mysterious and atmospheric dungeon, you must navigate your way to safety, dodging Papa’s sickening traps and negotiating with his palace’s deranged inhabitants, using only your ears and the stunningly recorded responsive binaural audio.
Papa Sangre itself is still available on the App Store. You can also pick up the sequel (starring Sean Bean!) – but I have to say that I have a soft spot for the original, not least because of how rewarding working with a fantastic team to solve unsolvable game design problems proved to be.
